There are several upcoming information and training sessions for prospective council candidates ahead of the Golden Plains Shire Council election in October.

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) will hold two free candidate information sessions in Golden Plains Shire for those considering nominating as a candidate. 

Attendance is optional however it is recommended that prospective candidates attend one of the following sessions:

  • Bannockburn: 4 September from 6pm in the Council Chamber at the Golden Plains Civic Centre, 2 Pope Street Bannockburn
  • Smythesdale: 5 September from 12:30pm in the Multipurpose Room at the Well, 19 Heales Street, Smythesdale

Interested candidates are encouraged to attend one of these sessions. There is no pre-registration required as attendance will be taken on the day. 
Prospective candidates will also need to complete the Local Government Victoria Mandatory Candidate Training, which is compulsory for all Victorian’s who wish to nominate as a candidate in any council elections. 

The mandatory training aims to equip prospective councillors with a comprehensive understanding of their roles and responsibilities. In July 2024, the training module was reviewed and updated to enhance candidates’ knowledge and readiness for the role. The updated training now includes crucial information on understanding conflicts of interest, adhering to the required code of conduct, and the support available to help incoming councillors perform effectively. 

In addition, the Municipal Association of Victoria will host several information sessions for the community and prospective candidates (both online and in person) including a session for Councils in Great South Coast Barwon including Golden Plains Shire Council. This session will be hosted by the City of Greater Geelong on Wednesday 28 August from 6.30 to 8.30pm at Geelong City Hall, 27 Little Malop Street, Geelong.

The Victorian Electoral Commission will open nominations on 9 September 2024, with nominations closing at 12pm, 17 September 2024, at which point Council will enter the Election Period. The Election will take place by postal ballot that will be mailed out from 7 October with the closing of voting being 25 October, 2024 at 6pm.
