Golden Plains Shire Council is embarking on an exciting new chapter with the Smythesdale Structure Plan, which aims to guide Smythesdale’s growth while enhancing bushfire resilience and community wellbeing.
Following a Shire-wide bushfire risk assessment as part of the Growing Places Strategy, Council has identified areas across the Shire better suited for long-term development due to lower bushfire risks. This has prompted a shift in our approach to Smythesdale, where we’re reimagining the town’s future with a focus on enhancing not only it’s bushfire resilience, but also its potential economic growth and community wellbeing.
As part of this initiative, a further bushfire assessment has been completed for the Smythesdale township, identifying opportunities to improve Smythesdale’s overall bushfire resilience and achieve a meaningful risk reduction. This initiative will guide new directions for Smythesdale, ensuring its long-term safety and sustainability.
Council CEO Shane Walden said Council is excited to re-engage with the community and is inviting residents to share their perspectives as we take these next steps.
We are committed to ensuring that the future of Smythesdale is built on a foundation of safety, sustainability and community. We’re eager to reconnect with the Smythesdale community and hear their ideas on how we can adapt to and thrive together, Mr Walden said.
Community members are encouraged to engage with Council at the Smythesdale Country Market on Saturday, 16 November 2024. Council staff will be available to discuss the new directions for the Smythesdale Structure Plan, answer questions and hear residents’ visions for the town’s future. An Opportunities Paper, outlining key findings and potential pathways, will be provided at the market for residents to review.
Golden Plains Shire Council will also hold workshops in early 2025 to delve deeper into the Opportunities Paper and explore potential directions for Smythesdale’s future.
