On Tuesday 18 February, Council’s strategic planning officers, economic development officer and bushfire planning consultant facilitated a community workshop to discuss several key issues relating to the future options for the town.
Valuable and constructive feedback on the following questions was received by a number of workshop participants:
- What is the role and aspirations for Smythesdale?
- What would ensure Smythesdale is able to fulfil its aspirations?
- How can Smythesdale improve its safety and sustainability given the bushfire, flood and climate change environment?
- What’s missing in the Structure Plan for Smythesdale?
Strong themes which emerged from the workshop included:
- Supporting infill and limited growth.
- Preparation of the town for fire.
- Opportunities for ageing in place.
- Opportunities for tourism.
- The role of the town as a service and transport hub.
- Transport needs.
- Support for new business initiatives and existing businesses.
- A committed community.
Submissions to the Towards a structure plan for Smythesdale: Opportunities Report are due by Friday 28 February 2025. Information about the Smythesdale Structure Plan project can be found on Council’s website here.
Further assessments and technical work, including a Flood Study and Cultural Values Assessment, will be prepared to inform a draft Structure Plan. Consultation on a draft Structure Plan is expected to be in the latter part of the year.
