Safe disposal of hazardous materials

Detox Your Home

Some household products can be dangerous and could harm your family or pets as they can release toxic fumes and pollute our environment. Do not pour them down the sink or put them out in your bins.

Detox your home is a free service to safely dispose of unwanted toxic household chemicals. Items accepted include materials such as weed killers, cleaning products, cosmetics, cooking oil and fire extinguishers. A full list of items accepted can be found here.

The City of Greater Geelong organises Detox Your Home events on a regular basis, which are open to Golden Plains Shire residents.

Asbestos

WorkSafe Victoria (WorkSafe), the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have provided a comprehensive guide to the disposal of asbestos here.

The website provides information to help homeowners, tenants, employers and employees understand the risks of asbestos. This includes the legal duties that apply, how to comply with those duties, and resources for safely managing and removing asbestos in homes and workplaces.

ChemClear

ChemClear provides a reliable and responsible collection and disposal service for obsolete agricultural and veterinary chemicals.

Other hazardous materials

Motor oils and e-waste are generally accepted at the following sites:

E-waste refers to any item with a plug, battery or cord that is no longer working or wanted. Learn more by visiting Council’s dedicated e-waste page here

For disposal of other hazardous materials, residents should check with relevant Transfer Stations for disposal options.
